Message: We are a young country and unfortunately, since our independence in 1971, there has not been too much exposure to good governance and leadership. We lack role models; sure we have Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-the Father of the nation, but he lived over three decades ago. In the mean time we have been unable to produce a real hero! People have absolutely no one to look up to on a national level which is so important to a developing country. It is not necessary to have umpteen degrees to run a country, but common sense is a definite must! And in the absence of real role models, many imposters, from corrupt dictators to religious fanatics, have tried to fill the void. The latter now has the audacity to suggest that people of Bangladesh give up democracy and establish a Theocracy where everything is decided by Islamic law! That any progress made by any organizations for women\'s rights, and human rights in general be pushed back to the stone age! Western media will have us believe that Bangladesh is the new Afghanistan where terrorist camps are allowed to flourish freely and journalists and activists who try to report them, are systematically “eliminated”. But the government of bangladesh will swear up and down that the situation is not “that bad”. While religious fanaticism has definitely become \"more active in the last decade, it is not to a point where democracy could be threatened\"-Yet??! Well, how bad is it? And how bad does it have to get for them to say “enough!”? Shouldn’t we apply some common sense here and nip this at the bud (that is if it is not too late already)? I hope that the government will no longer hide in the sand about this. There is no accountability for the heinous crimes committed in the name of politics and/or religion and the recent string of synchronized bombings comes as no surprise. This was almost like a teaser, as if the terrorists wanted us to know that if they wanted, it could have been a lot worse. The political parties must set their petty differences aside and realize that they are only strengthening another political party with their “sweep under the rug” policy. And pretty soon, there may no longer be a need for a coalition.

Message: On behalf of Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN), a network of non-resident Bangladeshis and supporting members of the international community committed to help Bangladesh solve her environmental problems, we condemn and are deeply alarmed by the coordinated multiple bombings in Bangladesh today that have so far led to at least one death and injuries to scores of people, not to menton the destruction of government and non government property. According to BBC, the organization named Jamatul Mujahideen has claimed the responsibility of these bombings and suggested that they are aimed at protesting Bush and Blair\'s policy in Iraq and at establishing Islamic rule in Bangladesh. What was the crime of the innocent Rajshahi businessman who died and dozens of people who have been injured, with some of them maimed for life? Were they any way involved with formulation and implementation of Bush and Blair policies? Do killing and maiming innocent people constitute Islamic rule? Under considerable domestic and particularly international pressure the government earlier banned Jamatul Mujahideen (along with JMJB). However today\'s coordinated about 300 simultaneous bombings spanning all over Bangladesh clearly show that the formal banning has not been able to contain or curtail the nefarious capacity of these organizations. Much more needs to be done. We urge all democratic forces of Bangladesh to unite and resist the rise of the sinister forces who are intent on imposing their medieval outlook on the country through terror and violence. Let these forces not take advantage of the rivalry for power among major parties. The resistance has to be here and now, otherwise soon it may be too late. We express our deep sympathy for those killed and injured by these bombings. Thanks, Nazrul Islam Coordinator, BEN

Message:
It appears too many in Bangladesh and a sizable section of expatriates have been more concerned with ``desher bhabmoorti\'\' than confronting the dark forces of religious intolerance that has been gathering steam for a while. It is time that we recognize that no matter what political persuasion you have, this is an eventual threat to you if you believe in any kind of pluralism. Today, it is the Ahmadiyaa, tomorrow it will be any one who disagrees with them, including those with a religious bent.

Message: Thank you very much for inviting me to participate on this newly launched web-forum. I do appreciate the initiative that some Bangladeshi brothers had taken to register their protest against the violence which had taken toll of so many innocent lives and harming the Bangladesh\'s image as tolerant society. But I am against to lay blame on any person, group or ethnicity without having a proof. I know today it is very complacent and handy, ready made opinion that whatever violence taken place in the world is the work of islamists and muslim. Violence is condemnable in all its form no matter who carry out it either states or some individuals but to depict a permanent group as violent is not only correct but amount to persecution and victimization of pointed out group. If under prejudices that had taken course in the heart of west and their sympathizers after math of the 9/11 will contnue to blame islam and muslim so we are only going to broaden the gulf between the civilizations. And Generations to come will only lament on us for our negative role. We must have to be impartial and very investigative in our conduct of opinions against any group and individuals.
